My wife tells me that, at some point, I will solely see pastors and church staff in my counseling practice. She may be right. I love to work with people who shepherd others. Part of my workweek already consists of making myself available for those on staff at a local church.
Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” How can a spiritual leader care for others if he or she is not first watching over his or her own heart? Everything you are, do, and offer to others flows out of the state of your heart.
So how is your heart? Are you connected to yourself? Passionate, alive, and hopeful as God intended? When was the last time you paid attention to the movements, desires, longings, and despair inside of you? When did you last invite feedback and reflection from someone who cares about you and your work and also is committed to telling you the truth about yourself?
In my years of working with church staff, I have seen individuals’ passion renewed and staff relationships strengthened. I have seen spiritual leaders recover and lead from a restored heart. I have also seen staff culture transformed by individuals who learn how to know, talk about, and care for their soul and the hearts of others. When you know yourself, you can better know the hearts of those you work alongside and serve.
If you work at a church, I would love to become a safe haven for you to unpack your story and process life, work, and relationships. My passion is to see your heart freed, restored, and released to shepherd others.
